You Are Bamboo
As Thanksgiving approaches, some meet it with joy, some with anxiety, some with sadness, some with dread.
Joy of seeing those you love as you come together to make even more beautiful memories.
Anxiety of walking on eggshells, making sure to say/do the right thing at the right time.
Sadness with celebrating and looking at that seat at the table where your loved one sat as they poured love and laughter into the day.
Dread at facing the day differently as you navigate separation, divorce, betrayal, heartbreak, loss and more.
Whatever emotions you’re bringing to the day, please bring an extra dose of love and compassion for yourself.
Relationships teach us so many lessons. While we learn from those who’ve loved us unconditionally, if you notice, we often learn the most from those who’ve hurt us the most. When we take the lesson meant to be learned by the experience (typically something like: create boundaries, realize how lovable/worthy/deserving you are, you matter to name a few) we come out of it stronger, better and wiser.
As I always say, that’s trauma well served.
Many who know me know that I have such admiration for bamboo. While the other flowers and plants are all beautifully popping up, bamboo stays underground for years. Nothing can make it grow before it’s ready.
Then, years later, when it’s ready, it shoots up so powerfully and quickly with the strength of concrete and steel. It stands strong on its own-but only because it took all those years to create a powerful network underground where it was weaving and interconnecting with other material for support-that’s what gives it its strength to stand on it’s own with a presence like nothing else.
So, as you’re moving into this experience, give yourself grace and space. Remind yourself of all you’ve managed to move through and who you are now because of it. Show yourself you’re just as important as everyone else you take care of and always give all that love to. Turn some back on yourself as you realize that you’re not only stronger than you think, you’re a pretty amazing bad$ss.
You got this. You are bamboo.
